Patient Care Database » About
Welcome to the NACDS Foundation Patient Care Database
The Patient Care Database includes citations and abstract information (when available) for peer-reviewed and trade journal articles (2007 to present) related to patient care services provided by community pharmacists. Citations may include links to full-text articles from PubMed Central or publisher web sites. This is the only database of its kind that pulls all relevant articles together in one place.
Purpose
Patients routinely seek out preventive care measures in community pharmacy settings including immunizations and diagnostic screenings. Community pharmacists are increasingly providing Medication Therapy Management, disease management and other services designed to improve adherence to medications, reduce adverse drug events and interactions, optimize prescribed treatments, and ultimately meaningfully impact patient health outcomes.
The goal of the NACDS Foundation Patient Care Database is to provide a one-stop resource to identify trends and provide documentation for pharmacist-provided services in community pharmacies operating within North America, in addition to any scientific research on community pharmacist patient care provided within the United States or globally. Information in the database is drawn from articles published in pharmacy trade press, major consumer print media, and public policy journals, as well as scientific studies.
The database is intended to provide the public, researchers and interested parties access to a searchable body of evidence of community pharmacist-provided care and the resultant patient outcomes.
Evaluation Process
The NACDS Foundation Patient Care Database includes peer-reviewed, trade journal, and news articles from January 1, 2007 to present. All articles are related to the area of community pharmacists providing patient care services (immunizations, disease state management, medication therapy management, etc). Peer-reviewed articles included those from North America (United States and Canada), as well as International articles in English. Trade journal and news articles were limited to the United States.
To create the database, researchers at the University of Tennessee Center for Medication Therapy Management conducted the following search strategy:
- English language peer-reviewed journal articles
- On-line databases searched included: including MEDLINE, Journals@Ovid Full Text, the NHS Economic evaluation database, EMBASE, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, and CINAHL.
- Search of Trade Journals included: Drug Store News, Drug Topics, Pharmacy Times, U.S. Pharmacist, RX Times, Chain Drug Review, Mass Market Retailers, Supermarket News, and Pharmacy Today.

- All items included in the database were reviewed and approved by an NACDS Foundation Workgroup.
